Hard drive speaker, 4 February 2009

Today I managed to cause a whole bunch of irreparable damage by making a hard drive speaker, that I saw on Instructables (the instructions were a bit rubbish, Afrotech’s instructions were a bit better).

Basically, you solder a pair of wires to the coil used to move the arm, connect it to an amp and off you go. Took a couple of minutes, used a bit of scabby old CAT5 I had laying about, and it worked brilliantly, as I played a few songs through it. Me being me, I got a bit carried away and played some dubstep really loud, and the bloody wires shook loose, snapping the wire to the coil, killing the speaker.

This is what it looked like before it broke (someone else’s video):

I then tried connecting the spindle motor, and that ended up with my amp giving off that familiar and terrifying smell of burning electronics, and me running straight for the power switch. Luckily, it worked fine after a new fuse!

Here’s a couple shots of my attempt:

I think I should probably just stick to programming.
